New Delhi, Oct 5 (NationPress) The Ministry of Textiles has declared a comprehensive nationwide 'Swadeshi Campaign' that will span the next six to nine months, aimed at enhancing the domestic demand for handloom, handicrafts, and textile products, particularly targeting urban millennials and Gen Z.
Post the launch of these Swadeshi campaigns, the ministry forecasts that domestic demand will experience a CAGR of 9–10 percent annually, ultimately achieving a total domestic demand for textiles of $250 billion by 2030, as stated in an official announcement.
As of 2024, India’s textiles and clothing industry was valued at $179 billion, boasting an annual growth rate surpassing 7 percent, according to government reports.
The household (HH) sector currently represents 58 percent of the domestic market, growing at a CAGR of 8.19 percent.
In contrast, non-household consumption accounts for 21 percent of the domestic market, progressing at a CAGR of 6.79 percent.
This Swadeshi campaign will be executed throughout India, aiming to elevate textile consumption among urban millennials and Gen Z, while simultaneously increasing market access and income opportunities for weavers, artisans, and MSMEs.
The initiative seeks to reposition Indian textiles as emblems of pride and style, especially for the younger demographic.
Ministries, public sector units, and educational institutions will be encouraged to utilize Indian-made textiles for uniforms and furnishings, according to an official statement.
The Ministry has indicated that this initiative complements existing programs, such as the production-linked incentive scheme for textiles, PM MITRA Parks, and the One District One Product initiative.
To promote the campaign, various events, social media outreach, and participation at the state level will be implemented, according to the release.
Recent modifications to GST rates are expected to boost demand for textiles and apparel in both household and non-household sectors, potentially leading to enhanced growth rates in textile consumption across the nation, as highlighted by government sources.
