Chennai, Feb 7 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly is set to reconvene on February 17 for the unveiling of the state's interim Budget for the fiscal year 2026-2027, as announced by Speaker M. Appavu on Saturday.
This session, kicking off at 9:30 a.m., comes in anticipation of the upcoming Assembly elections likely to take place in April or May this year.
During a press conference in Tirunelveli, the Speaker revealed that Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu will present the interim Budget on the session's inaugural day.
The government aims to outline its financial strategies and priorities while seeking the legislative body’s endorsement to manage funds throughout the election period.
In addition to the interim Budget, the Finance Minister is expected to present the request for advance grants for 2026–2027 along with proposals for additional spending for the current financial year, 2025–2026.
These financial discussions are slated for consideration in the Assembly on February 20.
The duration of the Assembly session remains undecided. Appavu stated that the Business Advisory Committee will convene soon to finalize the number of sittings and outline the agenda.
The Speaker also highlighted initiatives aimed at enhancing transparency and public access to Assembly debates.
Addressing inquiries about live broadcasts, he noted that the State government, under the leadership of Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, plans to broaden real-time coverage of legislative activities.
Currently, the question hour and responses from ministers are aired live, with plans to soon include discussions on the demand for grants in the livestream.
He pointed out that while certain states only provide edited versions of proceedings, Tamil Nadu is striving for a more thorough coverage.
“The digitization of previous Assembly records is progressing efficiently. Once completed, individuals from anywhere globally will have access,” he remarked.
Responding to accusations from opposition parties regarding interruptions during live broadcasts, Appavu clarified that each member is allocated a specific time slot, and the coverage is uninterrupted.
With the interim Budget poised to detail the government's immediate fiscal strategy, this upcoming session is anticipated to significantly influence the state’s political and economic landscape leading up to the elections.
