Chennai, Feb 18 (NationPress) Tamil Nadu's Finance Minister Thangam Thenarasu is scheduled to unveil the state budget on March 14 during the Legislative Assembly session, as announced by Speaker M. Appavu on Tuesday.

The Business Advisory Committee is expected to convene to finalize the session's duration.

Moreover, a supplementary budget for the ongoing financial year will be introduced on March 21, Appavu informed the press.

This budget is anticipated to feature some unexpected announcements, especially related to the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai (KMUT) scheme.

Recently, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin suggested that more eligible beneficiaries could be added to the scheme soon, heightening public anticipation for a major policy update.

Given the current political scenario, the budget session is expected to be quite contentious.

The ruling DMK-led coalition is likely to criticize the BJP-led Union government for the delays in funding allocations to the state.

Additionally, the enforcement of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 — linked by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to financing under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan — is expected to be a significant issue of debate.

Conversely, the Opposition AIADMK and BJP are likely to highlight the state's law and order situation, particularly addressing the increase in crimes against women and children, including sexual offenses.

The session will also see a boost in the DMK’s legislative power following V.C. Chandhirakumar's entry as the MLA of Erode East.

Chandhirakumar, a senior DMK figure, won the February 5 bye-election by a substantial margin of 90,629 votes. He officially took the oath as an MLA on February 10, with Speaker Appavu administering the oath at the Assembly Secretariat.

With significant political stakes and critical policy issues on the table, the upcoming Budget Session is poised to be a heated event in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
