Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran on Sunday, 21 June publicly criticised the TVK-led state government after reports emerged that students at a government primary school in Vilathikulam, Thoothukudi district, were handed biscuit packets instead of the hot nutritious breakfast mandated under the state's flagship Breakfast Scheme. Around 40 students were reportedly affected at the school, which was unable to serve the regular meal on the day in question.

What Reportedly Happened

According to reports, the school in Vilathikulam distributed biscuit packets to approximately 40 students when it could not fulfil its obligation under the Breakfast Scheme — a programme designed to provide nutritious morning meals to government school students, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Officials reportedly attributed the shortfall to an unexpected rise in the number of students availing themselves of the scheme.

BJP's Criticism and Demands

Nagenthran rejected the logistical explanation outright. 'If the number of students has increased, the government should have planned accordingly and ensured that sufficient food was available. Lack of planning cannot be used as an excuse when it concerns the welfare of schoolchildren,' he said in a statement.

He further alleged that the incident exposed a broader failure by the administration of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to implement welfare programmes effectively. 'The government under Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has failed to properly implement even this welfare programme, which was introduced with the noble intention of ensuring that poor and underprivileged students can study well without suffering from hunger,' Nagenthran said.

The BJP leader called on the state government to order an inquiry into the incident and put in place immediate corrective measures to prevent recurrence across Tamil Nadu's government schools.
