Has the MP Mid-Day Meal Controversy Shaken the BJP Government?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhopal/Maihar, Jan 27 (NationPress) The Congress party has sharply criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Madhya Pradesh following the circulation of a video on social media that depicted school children being served mid-day meals on papers rather than plates at a government primary school in Maihar district on Republic Day.
In response to this incident, Jitu Patwari, the state Congress president, asserted that this event has revealed the exaggerated claims made by the BJP government regarding mid-day meal schemes.
He condemned the government, labeling the incident as a “reflection of systemic failures, governance breakdown, and lack of human compassion in Madhya Pradesh.”
Pointing to a prior incident in Sheopur district, where children were similarly served mid-day meals on papers, Patwari remarked that, “such occurrences are not just an affront to the children, but a disgrace to education and the Constitution.”
Quoting from the NCRB report, the Congress leader highlighted that around 10 lakh children in the state suffer from malnutrition, with approximately 1.36 lakh of them being severely malnourished.
“This alarming scenario persists despite official data from the central government confirming rampant malnutrition in the state, and a CAG report that has clearly identified a nutritional food scam in Madhya Pradesh,”
he stated.
The uproar began after a video surfaced on social media, showing students seated on the floor consuming halwa-puri served on tattered pages from old notebooks and books.
In light of the backlash regarding the use of notebook pages for mid-meals, the district administration initiated disciplinary actions against the officials implicated after an inquiry conducted on Tuesday.
“Following the investigation report from District Project Coordinator (DPC) Vishnu Tripathi, a proposal to suspend the principal in charge of Government High School, Sunil Kumar Tripathi, has been submitted to the Commissioner of Rewa. Additionally, the salary of contract employee BRC Pradeep Singh will be deducted for one month,”
stated a notification from the district administration.
