Chennai, Nov 15 (NationPress) A forecast predicts heavy rainfall in various regions of Tamil Nadu over the next 48 hours, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue alerts for several coastal and inland districts.
The weather agency indicated that rain showers, which commenced in numerous areas on Saturday, are expected to become more intense, particularly in the delta and northern coastal regions.
In its early morning update, the IMD noted that Ramanathapuram district experienced substantial rainfall during the 24-hour period concluding Friday morning.
Mandapam recorded 7 cm of rain, the highest in the state. Other areas such as Rameswaram in Ramanathapuram district, Pamban, and Azhagarai Estate in the Nilgiris reported approximately 5 cm of rain each.
Officials attribute these widespread rains to an atmospheric circulation that is persisting over southern Sri Lanka and the adjacent southwest Bay of Bengal.
The forecast indicates that sporadic rain will persist across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry today and tomorrow, with the potential for thunderstorms in some areas.
The IMD anticipates moderate rainfall to continue in various districts until November 20.
A heavy rain warning has been issued for Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, and Pudukottai districts.
These areas, located in the Cauvery delta, are expected to experience significant rainfall due to moisture-rich winds from the Bay of Bengal interacting with prevailing atmospheric conditions.
In addition to the warning for Sunday, the IMD has highlighted that several districts, including Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, and Thanjavur, may also experience heavy rain in the upcoming days.
The Union Territories of Puducherry and Karaikal are also included in this alert.
Meanwhile, Chennai and its neighboring areas experienced a partially cloudy sky today, with light showers possible in some localities.
Although the city has yet to face intense rainfall, the weather office has warned residents to prepare for increased rain activity by late Saturday.
Fishermen are advised to stay updated due to anticipated rough sea conditions in the southwest Bay of Bengal.
The IMD stated that detailed advisories will be issued based on the evolution of the weather system over the next 48 hours.
Authorities in the delta region and coastal districts have been urged to remain vigilant as the November rain system develops, leading to widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu in the coming days.
