Chennai, Jan 20 (NationPress) The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall across five districts in Tamil Nadu within the next 48 hours.

The districts poised to be impacted include Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, and Tenkasi.

The RMC reports that a lower-level circulation in the atmosphere is prevailing over the southwestern Bay of Bengal, just off the coast of Tamil Nadu. This weather phenomenon is enhancing rainfall activities in the region.

In Chennai, light to moderate rain is anticipated over the next two days. However, districts like Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Tenkasi, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanniyakumari can expect heavy to very heavy rain during the day.

Since Saturday evening, Tenkasi has already recorded significant rainfall. Fishermen are advised to refrain from going to sea due to the squally weather conditions. Wind speeds are projected to be between 35-45 km/h, with gusts reaching 55 km/h along the southern coast of Tamil Nadu, particularly in the Comorin area and the nearby Gulf of Mannar over the next two days.

The northeast monsoon, which commenced on October 1, has not fully subsided in Tamil Nadu. Increased moisture levels in the sea and shifts in wind flow patterns are maintaining the current rainfall trends across the state.

Tamil Nadu has seen a 14 percent surplus in rainfall during the northeast monsoon season, accumulating 447 mm compared to the average seasonal total of 393 mm. Chennai has recorded 845 mm of rainfall, which is 16 percent above average, while Coimbatore has experienced a significant 47 percent increase.

Maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu are likely to decrease by 2-4 degrees Celsius below normal, ranging from 2 degrees to 32 degrees, from January 17 to January 23.

Cyclone Fengal, which impacted Tamil Nadu between November 29 and December 1, resulted in widespread destruction and further affected the state’s rainfall figures.

The RMC anticipates above-average rainfall in Tamil Nadu until January 23, with coastal areas, including Chennai, expecting light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms in the upcoming days.
