Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin Criticizes Union Cabinet's Approval of 'One Nation, One Election' Bill

Chennai, Dec 12 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin, expressed strong disapproval on Thursday regarding the Union Cabinet's endorsement of the 'One Nation, One Election' Bill for presentation in Parliament amidst the ongoing Winter Session. In a statement shared on the social media platform X, Stalin remarked, “The Union Cabinet has sanctioned the introduction of the oppressive ‘One Nation, One Election Bill’ in Parliament. This unrealistic and anti-democratic initiative will eliminate regional voices, undermine federalism, and disturb effective governance. “Stand up, INDIA! Let us counter this assault on Indian democracy with all our might!”
It is important to note that CM Stalin had previously introduced a resolution in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in February 2024 opposing the Union Government's initiative for 'One Nation, One Election.'
While presenting this resolution, CM Stalin proclaimed, “The Legislative Assembly urges the Union Government to refrain from implementing the ‘One Nation, One Election’ policy, as it contradicts democratic principles, is impractical, and lacks foundation in the Constitution of India.”
At that time, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had contested Stalin's resolution.
BJP MLA Vanathi Sreenivasan from Coimbatore stated, “India is the largest democracy, and a committee has been established to deliberate on the concept of ‘One Nation, One Election.’ Each party is welcome to express its views within this committee. Elections are conducted annually in some states, and ‘One Nation, One Election’ could serve as a solution to this. Even former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Karunanidhi acknowledged the necessity for ‘One Nation, One Election’ in his book ‘Nenjukku Neethi’.”
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the Bill on Thursday, which is now poised for introduction in Parliament.
The Centre intends to submit the Bill to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further evaluation. In March, a high-level committee chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind presented its findings on the proposal's feasibility ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
