Tamil Nadu govt formation in limbo as TVK seeks majority, VCK holds key

Chennai remains in political suspense on Saturday, 9 May as Tamil Nadu awaits clarity on government formation following the 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election, with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) — the single largest party — still short of a confirmed majority and critical support decisions pending.

Where the Numbers Stand

TVK, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, emerged as the single largest party in the 234-seat Tamil Nadu Assembly, winning 108 seats in polling held on 23 April across all constituencies in a single phase. The election featured a fierce four-cornered contest involving the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) alliance, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) alliance, Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), and TVK. While Congress and the Left parties have already extended formal support to TVK, the party is still awaiting a crucial decision from Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), whose backing is widely considered decisive in determining whether Vijay can comfortably cross the majority mark.

VCK's Announcement Awaited

VCK announced that party president Thol Thirumavalavan would make an official statement on support to TVK at 4 pm on Saturday. Political observers believe this announcement could prove to be the turning point in the government formation process. Without VCK's backing, TVK's path to a majority in the 234-member House remains uncertain.
