Chennai, May 19 (NationPress) In a remarkable achievement, Tamil Nadu has reported its lowest murder rate in over a decade for the year 2024, a success credited to a range of proactive and sustained law enforcement strategies implemented by the State police.
Data from the State Police Headquarters reveals that the total number of murders dropped to 1,563 in 2024, marking the lowest figure recorded in the past 12 years.
Long-term analysis shows that murder cases in the state saw a gradual rise between 2017 and 2020, peaking at 1,745 in 2019. However, since 2021, the murder rate has been on a consistent downward trend.
This decline has persisted into 2025, with an average of only 120 murder cases reported monthly until April, compared to 130 in 2024 and a notable decrease from the 161 monthly average recorded in 2012.
Police officials noted a significant drop in overall incidents of “bodily offences,” encompassing murder and assault cases, in 2024 compared to the previous year.
Furthermore, there was a marked reduction in rowdy-related murders, a significant concern in prior years. While crimes driven by passion or personal disputes are challenging to prevent, targeted approaches to combat rowdyism have shown promising results.
Key initiatives included the expedited processing of pending criminal cases against known offenders. In 2024, 188 cases were identified and prosecuted, resulting in the conviction of 242 rowdies.
Of these convictions, 150 received sentences of 10 years or more, representing the highest number of long-term sentences for rowdies in over a decade. This momentum has continued into 2025, with 376 cases currently under close scrutiny.
As of April this year, 52 cases have led to convictions involving 87 history-sheeters. The Organised Crime Intelligence Unit (OCIU) has also been instrumental, issuing 4,460 life threat alerts between 2021 and 2025, which helped prevent 326 potential murders.
The police stated that ongoing focus on monitoring, intelligence gathering, and targeted actions against known offenders would remain pivotal in ensuring public safety throughout the state.
