New Delhi, July 4 (NationPress) The Finance Ministry revealed on Friday that the tax advantages associated with the National Pension Scheme (NPS) will be applicable mutatis mutandis to the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), as the latter is an option under the former.
This initiative aims to boost the UPS. The provisions ensure alignment with the current NPS framework and offer significant tax relief and incentives for employees choosing the UPS, as indicated in the statement from the Finance Ministry.
The phrase mutatis mutandis refers to making necessary alterations while keeping the core principle intact. It signifies that while adjustments are essential to accommodate varying circumstances, the fundamental idea remains unchanged.
Incorporating the UPS into the tax framework is another stride in the government's mission to enhance retirement security for Central government employees through transparent, adaptable, and tax-efficient solutions, according to the Finance Ministry.
Earlier, the Finance Ministry had announced the launch of the UPS as an option under the NPS for recruits joining the Central government service starting April 1, 2025, providing a one-time choice for Central government employees already participating in the NPS to switch to the UPS.
To put this framework into action, the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) issued the PFRDA (Operationalisation of the Unified Pension Scheme under NPS) Regulations, 2025 on March 19, 2025.
These regulations facilitate the enrollment of three groups of Central government employees. The first group includes current employees active as of April 1, 2025, who are part of the NPS, while the second group consists of new entrants to Central government services post-April 1, 2025.
The third group encompasses Central government employees who were part of the NPS and have retired or voluntarily left service under Fundamental Rules 56(j)
On May 30, the Finance Ministry also announced that Central government NPS subscribers who retired before March 31, 2025, after at least 10 years of qualifying service, or their legally wedded spouses, can now avail additional benefits under the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), on top of the NPS benefits already received.
