Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 25 (NationPress) The president of Kerala's Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) has conveyed his apology regarding the use of the clenched-fist slogan during the recent Global Ayyappa Sangamam near the Sabarimala temple, following significant backlash.
In a statement made to the media in the state capital on Thursday, P.S. Prasanth characterized the chanting of "Swamiye Sharanam Ayyappa" with a raised clenched fist as an action that, regardless of intentions, should not have taken place.
As a believer himself, Prasanth expressed, "If such a thing occurred, it may have been unintentional. Even then, it should not have happened, and I feel sorry about it," while addressing the ensuing controversy.
The clenched-fist salute, a gesture often linked with Communist and socialist movements as a symbol of solidarity, unity, and resistance, ignited debate when displayed by the TDB chief during his address at the Ayyappa Sangamam event on September 20 at Pampa, close to the hill shrine.
Defending his actions, Prasanth mentioned that such slogans are not new, referencing multiple YouTube videos where devotees chant ‘Sharanam’ while using a clenched-fist salute.
The TDB president’s apology is a notable step to quell tensions and reaffirm the event's spiritual integrity.
Despite the criticism, the TDB asserted that the Sangamam was a resounding success, highlighting the extensive support received from various community organizations.
Prasanth emphasized the involvement of nearly 29 groups, including well-known organizations like the Nair Service Society (NSS) and SNDP Yogam, as instrumental in achieving the event's spiritual goals.
He firmly rejected claims suggesting that the Sangamam had political motives, asserting that the focus remained exclusively on spirituality.
"Our assessment is that the Sangamam fulfilled its objectives. We need not engage with political controversies," he remarked.
Prasanth also criticized an alternative convention held in Pandalam in Pathanamthitta, labeling it a political assembly rather than a spiritual gathering.
He challenged the organizers to consider what their meeting contributed to the development of Sabarimala. The TDB maintains that the Global Ayyappa Sangamam was a vital unifying event for Ayyappa devotees globally, notwithstanding the minor controversy surrounding the chanting method.
