New Delhi, April 2 (NationPress) A demonstration is scheduled to take place at Jantar Mantar in the national capital on Wednesday, advocating for the enactment of the reservation Bill recently passed by the Telangana Legislative Assembly, which seeks to elevate the quota for Backward Classes from 23 percent to 42 percent. Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, is anticipated to join the demonstration organized by various Backward Classes associations from Telangana.

In addition to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, several prominent Congress figures, including Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, are expected to attend the protest in the national capital.

Telangana aspires to be the first state in India to implement reservations based on a caste survey, with its Legislative Assembly passing the Bill aimed at increasing the quota for Backward Classes in government employment, educational institutions, and local elections.

Telangana has emerged as the third Indian state, following Karnataka and Bihar, to conduct a caste survey to determine the caste-wise population statistics.

The newly approved reservation Bill from the Telangana Legislative Assembly proposes a 42 percent quota for Backward Classes, 18 percent for Scheduled Castes, and 10 percent for Scheduled Tribes, up from the existing 29 percent, 15 percent, and 6 percent, respectively.

This move aims to raise the quota ceiling from 50 percent, as stipulated by the Supreme Court, to 70 percent, pending approval from the Union government.

Following the Bill's passage, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to request a meeting to discuss the matter further. He also sought a gathering with representatives from the Congress, BJP, BRS, CPI, and AIMIM to secure the Union government's backing.

Immediately after the reservation Bill was approved by the Telangana Legislative Assembly, LoP Gandhi praised it as “revolutionary.” He reiterated the Congress party's commitment to conducting a nationwide caste census. “The Telangana government has utilized scientifically gathered caste data to ensure BCs receive their rightful entitlements. This is what the entire country needs,” he shared on X, asserting that a caste census will “undoubtedly take place in India.”

He is expected to participate in the demonstration today at Jantar Mantar.
