Hyderabad, Nov 17 (NationPress) The Telangana Cabinet convened on Monday and opted to hold only Gram Panchayat elections in December. This decision comes as the Rs 3000 crore grant from the Centre is set to expire by March 31, 2026.
The Cabinet, led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, stated that decisions regarding elections for Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies (MPTCs), Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTCs), and municipal corporations will be made pending the High Court’s final ruling on 42 percent reservation for Backward Classes (BCs).
Following the Praja Palana celebrations, which commemorate two years of the Congress administration, the Gram Panchayat elections are scheduled to take place anytime after the festivities from December 1 to 9, as informed by Minister for Revenue Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy.
The minister emphasized that the 15th Finance Commission's term concludes on March 31, 2026, and if the elections are not conducted before this deadline, the Rs 3000 crore grant earmarked for Gram Panchayats will be forfeited.
In line with the High Court directives, local body elections are required to maintain a 50 percent cap on reservations across all categories.
The government is dedicated to ensuring 42 percent reservation for BCs in local bodies, promising that the Gram Panchayat elections will allocate 42 percent tickets to BCs.
The dedicated BC Commission has provided a reservation list to support this commitment, and the election process had commenced based on this framework. However, challenges to the 42 percent reservations for BCs led to a suspension of the electoral process.
The Cabinet has decided to request a report from the BC Commission regarding reservations for the positions of Gram Panchayat sarpanch and ward members.
Furthermore, the Cabinet will wait for the court's final verdict on 42 percent reservations before deciding on the MPTC and ZPTC elections.
In a moment of remembrance, the Cabinet honored the late esteemed Telugu poet Andesri, the author of the state song “Jaya Jayahe Telangana.” Plans to incorporate his songs into school curricula were also approved.
Additionally, the Cabinet has resolved to construct a memorial for Andesri and sanctioned a position for an assistant professor for his son.
