Hyderabad, Nov 17 (NationPress) The Telangana Cabinet has given its nod to the Telangana Gig Platform Workers Registration, Social Security and Welfare Bill on Monday.
The meeting, presided over by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, resulted in the Bill's approval.
Labour Minister Gaddam Vivek Venkataswamy shared with media representatives post-meeting that this Bill is set to be introduced in the forthcoming assembly session.
A board will be established featuring members from the Gig workers’ union, aggregators, and government representatives.
Key highlights of the proposed legislation include the obligatory registration of gig workers by aggregators, a tripartite board composed of workers, aggregators, and government for overseeing gig worker welfare, and a welfare fund aimed at supporting gig workers, managed by this board.
The Minister emphasized that the Bill aims to ensure justice for gig workers and marks the initial step in addressing their challenges.
This legislation is anticipated to protect and assist approximately 420,000 gig workers in the state.
Earlier in April, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy announced that the state government was drafting legislation focused on the welfare and security of gig and platform workers.
He expressed that this law should serve as a benchmark for the nation.
The Labour Department created the draft to provide job security, insurance, and various rights for gig workers.
During a meeting on April 14, the Chief Minister proposed several amendments to the draft, highlighting the importance of prioritizing worker safety while fostering collaboration between companies and aggregators. He directed officials to upload the draft bill online for public feedback.
The government initially aimed to pass and implement the Bill on May 1, coinciding with International Labour Day, although its finalization faced delays.
The Chief Minister acknowledged that around 400,000 gig workers are engaged across the state in areas such as food delivery, transportation, and package delivery.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to enacting legislation that ensures the safety of gig and platform workers prior to the elections. Notably, Telangana was the first state in India to introduce accidental insurance for gig workers.
On December 30, 2023, the government issued directives to provide a Rs 5 lakh accidental insurance policy in cases of death involving gig or platform workers.
