The suspect, named Habibullah Laskar, reportedly confessed to the crime, according to officials on Monday.
The tragic incident took place several days prior in the Fakirpara area under the jurisdiction of the Usthi police station. The young girl was reported missing by her family while she was playing close to their residence.
Her lifeless body was found the following morning near her home, with one eye gruesomely gouged out.
Officials stated that the body was sent for an autopsy.
Investigators discovered that the girl was last seen with her cousin, and bloodstains located outside the accused's residence led to his apprehension.
“During questioning, Habibullah Laskar confessed to this barbaric act,” remarked Mithun Kumar Dey, Additional SP of the Diamond Harbour Police District.
SP Dey mentioned that the accused has been placed in seven days of police custody by the Diamond Harbour ACJM court.
The police have filed charges under sections applicable to rape and murder and have vowed to pursue the harshest penalties.
