Kolkata, March 15 (NationPress) A teenager was apprehended on Saturday for the alleged assault of a six-year-old girl in the Cooch Behar district during the Holi festival, locally known as Dolyatra in West Bengal.
The young victim is currently receiving treatment at Jalpaiguri Super-Speciality Hospital and remains in a critical state.
Asish P Subba, the Deputy Superintendent of Police of Mekhliganj, confirmed the suspect's arrest, stating that law enforcement was able to detain him before he could flee.
"An extensive investigation is underway regarding this case," he mentioned.
According to the police report filed by the victim's parents, she was enjoying the festivities when the alleged perpetrator lured her away with promises of kites.
Though a couple of the victim's friends attempted to follow her, the suspect sent them away. He then took the child to a secluded area and assaulted her.
In the evening, the young girl returned home severely bleeding and was rushed to the Mekhliganj sub-division hospital.
Upon revealing her traumatic experience to her parents, they promptly filed a report at the local police station, leading to the suspect's arrest.
Subsequently, the victim was transferred to Jalpaiguri Super-Speciality Hospital for superior care. She remains in profound shock, according to a district police representative.
Over the past six months, West Bengal has been in the spotlight due to numerous cases of sexual assault and murders involving minors.
The most notable incident was the horrific rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in August 2024.
