Hyderabad, May 2 (NationPress) Leaders from the Telangana Congress paid a visit to Governor Jishnu Dev Varma on Friday to express their gratitude for his approval of the bills introduced in the State Assembly, which advocate for 42 percent reservations for Backward Classes.
The delegation, spearheaded by Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President Mahesh Kumar Goud, met the Governor at the Raj Bhavan, thanking him for endorsing the bills and sending them to the President of India for further approval.
On March 17, the Telangana Assembly passed two significant bills aimed at increasing reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) to 42 percent in education, employment, and elections within both rural and urban local bodies.
The two bills, namely the Telangana Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes, and Scheduled Tribes (Reservation of Seats in Educational Institutions and of Appointments or Posts in Services under the State) Bill 2025 and The Telangana Backward Classes (Reservation of Seats in Rural and Urban Local Bodies) Bill 2025, were unanimously adopted by the Assembly.
Since raising BC reservations to 42 percent would exceed the 50 percent cap set by the Supreme Court for total quota allocation across all groups, the passed bills will require the Central Government's approval.
On the same day, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting a meeting with leaders from all political parties to discuss the enhancement of reservations for BCs.
The Chief Minister aimed to meet with the Prime Minister alongside representatives from Congress, BJP, AIMIM, and CPI.
The delegation that visited the Governor included BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, MLC Vijayashanthi, former MPs V. Hanumantha Rao and Madhu Yaskhi Goud, along with other BC leaders from the party.
After the meeting with the Governor, Ponnam Prabhakar stated that the Central government's decision to carry out a caste survey is largely attributed to the efforts of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.
The minister noted that Telangana conducted the caste survey with transparency and made the results public, asserting that Telangana has set a standard for the nation in this regard.
TPPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud remarked that the pressure from the Congress party was instrumental in prompting the Centre to initiate the caste survey.
