Hyderabad, Dec 18 (NationPress) - On Thursday, the Telangana Police established a new Special Investigation Team (SIT), overseen by Hyderabad Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar, to investigate the alleged phone tapping that occurred during the prior BRS regime.
The order for this nine-member SIT was issued by Director General of Police (DGP) B. Shivadhar Reddy.
The team comprises Ramagundam Police Commissioner Ambar Kishore Jha, Siddipet Commissioner of Police S. M. Vijay Kumar, along with Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) Ritiraj, K. Narayan Reddy, Greyhounds Group Commander M. Ravinder Reddy, Additional DCP K. S. Rao, Assistant Commissioner of Police P. Venkatagiri, and Deputy Superintendents of Police Ch. Sridhar and Nagender Rao.
ACP Venkatagiri, from Jubilee Hills, will serve as the lead investigator. He has been managing the inquiry related to the case initiated at Panjagutta Police Station in March of last year.
The SIT is tasked to conclude its investigation swiftly and submit a charge sheet, as per the DGP's directive.
This development follows the recent surrender of T. Prabhakar Rao, the former chief of the Special Intelligence Bureau, to the SIT led by the ACP.
The retired IPS officer turned himself in on December 12, a day after the Supreme Court mandated his surrender for custodial questioning.
The court's order was issued in response to Prabhakar Rao’s request for anticipatory bail.
He faces allegations of orchestrating the illegal surveillance of numerous prominent figures during the BRS administration, reportedly forming a special team within the SIB to monitor those opposing the BRS government.
The accused allegedly intercepted communications of leaders from the Congress and BJP, as well as businesspeople, celebrities, journalists, civil society members, and even judges.
These allegations emerged in March 2024 after the arrest of former Deputy Superintendent of Police D. Praneeth Rao, following a complaint from a superordinate.
Subsequent arrests included retired Deputy Commissioner of Police P. Radha Kishan Rao and additional superintendents of police N Bhujanga Rao and M. Thirupathanna.
After the BRS suffered defeat in the 2023 elections, Prabhakar Rao resigned and traveled to the US shortly before the case was lodged against him.
On May 29, 2025, the Supreme Court instructed officials to facilitate an emergency travel document for Prabhakar Rao’s return.
In compliance with a pledge made to the Supreme Court, Prabhakar Rao arrived back in India on June 8.
