Hyderabad, April 4 (NationPress) Unexpected rainfall and thunderstorms have caused significant damage to crops across various districts of Telangana, as reported by officials on Friday.
Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao has instructed officials to assess the fields and provide reports on the extent of the damage inflicted by the rains.
He also urged the marketing department to implement all necessary measures to safeguard the produce brought by farmers to the market yards.
Officials were directed to promptly transfer the procured stocks to warehouses.
Thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds wreaked havoc in multiple districts across north, south, and central Telangana on Thursday, resulting in the unfortunate loss of five lives in separate incidents.
The rains, along with strong winds and lightning, which commenced Thursday afternoon, persisted into the night, disrupting normal life in Hyderabad and its neighboring districts.
Intense rainfall inundated low-lying areas and roads, obstructing vehicular movement. The strong winds uprooted trees in various locations across the city.
Two agricultural workers succumbed to lightning strikes in the Nagarkurnool district, while two additional lightning-related fatalities were reported from Jogulamba Gadwal district. Another person died due to a wall collapse in Siddipet district.
Water flooded homes in low-lying regions of Mahabubabad and Bhadradri Kothagudem districts. The powerful winds also removed thatched and tin roofs.
The standing maize crop incurred severe damage in parts of Mahabubabad district, prompting affected farmers to request assistance from the state government.
The mango crop also faced considerable damage in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Medchal Malkajgiri, Medak, and Sangareddy districts.
Thunderstorms also harmed paddy crops in various areas of Nizamabad district, with further crop losses reported in Mulugu, Vikarabad, Mahabubnagar, Adilabad, and Mancherial districts.
This marks the second instance in less than a month of unseasonal rains damaging crops within the state.
Furthermore, the heavy rains on Thursday led to flooding in the Musi River in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district, with water flowing over the low-level bridge near Bheemalingam. Locals have been advocating for the construction of a high-level bridge over the river.
The floods disrupted transportation for vehicles and residents traveling to Sangam village in Valigonda mandal and Bollepalle in Bhuvanagiri mandal.
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for several districts, including Hyderabad.
Thunderstorms, featuring lightning and strong winds (30-40 kmph), are anticipated at isolated locations in Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvangiri, Rangareddy, Hyderabad, Medchal Malkajgiri, Vikarabad, Janagaon, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthi, Narayanpet, and Jogulamba Gadwal districts on Friday.
The maximum temperatures are expected to drop by 2 to 3 degrees, followed by a gradual increase of 2 to 3 degrees over the next three days.
