Hyderabad, Oct 8 (NationPress) Telangana Backward Classes Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar publicly apologized on Wednesday for his supposed unfortunate comment regarding his colleague Adluri Laxman Kumar.
In response to criticism from Dalit organizations, Prabhakar clarified that he did not intend any personal offense but expressed his sorrow if Scheduled Caste and Tribal Welfare Minister Laxman Kumar felt hurt.
This statement came just before a meeting arranged by AICC in-charge Meenkashi Natrajan and Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Mahesh Kumar Goud to address the situation, which had caused some embarrassment for the party.
Prabhakar remarked that Laxman Kumar is like a brother to him, stating, "The friendship we have nurtured in the Congress Party for 30 years goes beyond politics. Our bond and respect for each other have always been strong, and nobody can sever that. I have never made any disparaging remarks about him. As someone who has come up from the grassroots as a leader of the BC community, I would never harbor such views against anyone," he said, also acknowledging his role as the Transport minister.
"Unfortunately, some individuals have manipulated my words for political gain and spread misinformation. I am truly disheartened that this misunderstanding has affected someone as cherished as Adluri Laxman Kumar. I regret any hurt feelings he may have experienced," Prabhakar added.
He further expressed his commitment to the Congress Party's ideals, stating, "Together, under Rahul Gandhi's leadership, we will tirelessly work toward social justice and the betterment of our community."
Prabhakar's earlier 'buffalo' comment sparked controversy, leading some Dalit organizations to call for protests. In anticipation of these protests, police heightened security around his residence in Karimnagar.
This remark allegedly occurred when Laxman Kumar was late to a campaign event in the Jubilee Hills Assembly constituency.
In his reaction, Laxman Kumar accused Prabhakar of making derogatory remarks due to his Scheduled Caste background and demanded an apology.
Laxman Kumar indicated that he would file a complaint with AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, stating that he was appointed minister because of his identity as a member of the Madiga caste (a Scheduled Caste).
"I don't communicate in such a condescending manner. I expected him to recognize his error. We will see how things unfold today and tomorrow. If he (Ponnam Prabhakar) persists in his stance, I won't be responsible for the repercussions," Laxman Kumar informed his supporters.
Ponnam Prabhakar firmly denied any malicious intent in his comments, asserting that his words had been misconstrued and were related to logistical issues with his flight.
