Hyderabad, June 23 (NationPress) The Government of Telangana is set to introduce a comprehensive new sports policy aimed at elevating the state's status on the international stage, while also focusing on the training necessary to cultivate world-class athletes, as stated by a senior official on Monday.
This policy is expected to be discussed in the upcoming state Cabinet meeting scheduled for later today.
During the Olympic Day celebrations at LB Stadium in Hyderabad, Special Chief Secretary Jayesh Ranjan made this announcement.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has already instructed officials to establish objectives within the sports policy with the 2036 Olympic Games in mind.
Jayesh Ranjan emphasized the importance of creating athletes capable of excelling in the Olympics, noting that many countries have demonstrated their prowess in these global competitions.
Shivsena Reddy, chairman of the Telangana Sports Authority, mentioned that the forthcoming sports policy will include incentives for athletes. He claimed that previous governments had overlooked many athletes and assured that the current administration would rectify these injustices.
He also indicated that athletes who secure medals in various competitions will be guaranteed job opportunities.
Attendees included Sports Minister Vakati Srihari, advisor to the Telangana government on sports, and Jithender Reddy, president of the Telangana Olympics Association, among others.
The state government has already revealed plans to establish a Young India Physical Education and Sports University through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, similar to the Young India Skill University.
The Chief Minister has mandated the formation of a Special Board to oversee the university and appoint a chairman who will have the authority to operate it as an autonomous body.
The university is set to offer 14 training programs in various sports including cricket, hockey, football, basketball, swimming, tennis, badminton, shooting, boxing, wrestling, table tennis, athletics, gymnastics, and aquatics.
The university will commence its operations at the Gachibowli Sports Stadium, which spans across 70 acres and has pre-existing facilities ready for various sports training. The Chief Minister has proposed that these facilities be upgraded to cater to future requirements.
Students from 14 different locations across the state participated in the Olympic Day celebrations, which featured para-athlete Deepthi Jeevanji, a bronze medalist at the 2024 Paralympics.
