Telangana breakfast scheme for 27 lakh students 'world's largest': DyCM Vikramarka
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Telangana's school breakfast programme, which covers 27 lakh students across government schools in the state, is the world's largest initiative of its kind, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka said on Tuesday, 6 October 2026. Speaking at a public event in Suryapet district, Vikramarka maintained that no other government anywhere in the world provides free daily breakfast at this scale, calling it a reflection of the Telangana government's 'humane approach'.
Foundation Stone for Centralised Kitchen at Munagala
Vikramarka, along with Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy, laid the foundation stone for a centralised community kitchen in Munagala village, Kodad Assembly constituency, Suryapet district. The greenfield kitchen will be built at a cost of ₹9.6 crore and, once operational, will supply hot breakfast from a single facility to nearly 60,000 students enrolled in 1,020 schools. The kitchen will be equipped with modern technology and hygienic infrastructure, officials said.
What Students Are Being Served
Breakfast is currently provided six days a week to students in government schools across Telangana. The menu alternates between milk on three days and ragi porridge on the remaining three — a combination chosen for its nutritional value during children's formative years. The Deputy CM emphasised that the food should not be seen as a freebie but as an investment in the state's future human capital.
Welfare Spending as Economic Investment
Vikramarka, who also holds the portfolio of Finance Minister, argued that expenditure on poor and middle-class families — including the breakfast scheme — ultimately raises the state's Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP). He stated that when children receive adequate nutrition, women achieve economic empowerment, and farmers receive support, overall productivity rises. He cited schemes such as Rythu Bharosa, free electricity, supply of fine rice, Rajiv Aarogyasri, free RTC bus travel for women, interest-free loans, fee reimbursement, and Indiramma Houses as part of an integrated approach to lifting poor families out of poverty.
Scale and Significance
According to Vikramarka, coordinating the simultaneous preparation and delivery of breakfast to 27 lakh students — equivalent to 27 million children — every morning is a logistical feat that has no parallel globally. The Deputy CM described the state's commitment as evidence that welfare and economic growth are complementary rather than competing objectives. The Munagala kitchen is expected to serve as a model for similar centralised facilities across the state going forward.
