Is There Rising Tension in Beldanga Over the Death of a Migrant Worker?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 16 (NationPress) Tension surged in Beldanga, located in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal, on Friday as the remains of a local migrant worker, who was reportedly murdered in Jharkhand, returned to his home village.
The deceased has been identified as Alauddin Sheikh (36), a resident of Sujarpur-Kamarpur village panchayat in Beldanga.
Alauddin was working in Jharkhand as a street hawker to support his family.
His relatives stated that they received news of his death on Thursday morning from Jharkhand.
According to the Jharkhand Police, Alauddin's body was discovered hanging in his rented accommodation.
However, his family contends that, despite police claims of suicide, they believe he was first assaulted and then hanged.
As Alauddin's body arrived home, a furious crowd gathered, initially blocking the National Highways by setting tires ablaze. The protests soon escalated to include obstructions on railway tracks as well.
These simultaneous road and rail blockades caused significant traffic disruptions on the National Highways and severely affected local train services.
A police unit has been deployed to the scene in an effort to persuade the agitated crowd to lift the blockades.
The leader of the opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, has urged the state police Director General, Rajeev Kumar, to dispatch additional forces to manage the situation.
He highlighted that there had been instances of stone pelting aimed at blocking the transport routes. "The area is under the complete control of criminals and thugs. There has been no visible police intervention thus far. Thousands of travelers are stranded, frightened, and lacking food and water, with no immediate solution in sight," the opposition leader asserted.
He further indicated that the situation reflects a loss of administrative control in West Bengal, with anti-social elements and rioters apparently receiving support from the Trinamool Congress.
