Tension gripped Jadavpur University in Kolkata on 20 August after supporters of the Students' Federation of India (SFI) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) clashed on campus overnight, prompting Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharya to raise the possibility of establishing a permanent police outpost on the premises. The incident has sharply escalated tensions at one of West Bengal's most prominent public universities, with rival marches and heavy police deployment following in the clashes' wake.

The Clashes and FIR

The confrontation between SFI — the student wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) — and ABVP took place in the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday. An FIR was subsequently registered against 11 individuals under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Jadavpur Police Station. All 11 persons named in the FIR are reportedly associated with SFI or other Left-wing student organisations.

What the Vice-Chancellor Said

Addressing the situation on Thursday, Vice-Chancellor Bhattacharya said a permanent police outpost would be at odds with the university's established ethos. 'A university campus cannot be beyond the law and order of the country. So whatever laws are in the legal system of the country will be applicable here as well. I will try to maintain security within the campus. I am familiar with this ecosystem here. We believe in open-minded thinking. That will remain. A permanent police outpost does not suit the culture of Jadavpur University. But if such incidents happen again and again, we will have to think of that,' he said. His remarks reflect a difficult balance between preserving academic freedoms and restoring order.

Rival Marches and Police Deployment

On Thursday morning, SFI supporters launched a protest march toward the campus from Jadavpur 8 Bus Stand. A large contingent of Kolkata Police personnel, supplemented by Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), intercepted the march before it could reach the university. Simultaneously, ABVP organised a counter-rally originating from Golpark Crossing in south Kolkata. Police were expected to halt that procession near Jadavpur Police Station as well. The primary aim of the deployment, according to officials, was to keep the two groups apart and prevent further confrontation.

Warnings and Escalating Rhetoric

The SFI has publicly warned that it will not accept any attempt by the ABVP to advance toward the university campus from the direction of Jadavpur Police Station. With both groups maintaining their positions and rival marches still underway, the risk of renewed clashes remained a concern for authorities through Thursday.

Broader Context

Jadavpur University has historically been a flashpoint for student political activity, with Left-affiliated groups having long dominated its campus politics. The entry and growing assertiveness of ABVP — the student wing aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) — has intensified friction in recent years. This is not the first time the campus has witnessed violent clashes between the two groups, and the Vice-Chancellor's warning signals that university administration may be running short of non-coercive options.
