Imphal, March 30 (NationPress) Tensions continue to grip Manipur's Ukhrul and Kamjong districts as various Naga organizations have called for a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the tragic killings of four cadres from the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN-IM) faction.

The incident, believed to be a result of internal conflict, occurred during a suspected fratricidal clash at Hongbei village in Kamjong district on Saturday, leading to the deaths of four NSCN-IM-Eastern Flank members at the hands of a rival faction. This incident has sparked unrest not only in Kamjong but also in the neighboring Ukhrul district.

A police source indicated that six members of the group were ambushed, resulting in four fatalities, while two others managed to flee the scene. The situation intensified on Sunday morning after the bodies were retrieved.

In response, an enraged crowd set fire to the NSCN-IM’s Wung regional office in Ukhrul district, although no injuries were reported during the incident.

The killings have drawn sharp condemnation from various Naga student groups and civil society organizations, including the Tangkhul Naga Long and the Kaishan Students’ Union, who expressed their profound dismay. They emphasized that this incident is particularly concerning given the numerous challenges currently facing the Naga community. These groups have demanded an impartial investigation to ensure justice for the victims and their families.

As uncertainty looms regarding the details of the killings, local media have reported that the families of the deceased have declined to perform last rites until a credible explanation is provided.

In an appeal for peace, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh urged the Tangkhul Naga community in Ukhrul to assist in restoring order and maintaining lawfulness. A statement from the Chief Minister’s Secretariat noted, "The Ukhrul district experienced violence on Sunday, and the atmosphere remains tense."

Expressing his condolences over the incident, Khemchand Singh stressed that violence is not a solution and urged all factions to avoid further escalation. He reassured that the government is taking the matter seriously, promising that justice will be served.

On Sunday, a team of civil society organizations from Ukhrul district, along with state Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh, met with the Chief Minister at the Secretariat to discuss the ongoing situation.

In a social media post, the Chief Minister mentioned that the delegation informed him of the unrest and developmental issues in the area. He reiterated that while infrastructure development is a priority, fostering communal harmony is equally essential for sustainable progress.

He stated, "Peace is fundamental to all developmental efforts, and we must collectively work to restore stability and enhance growth in Ukhrul."

This incident is part of a series of events that have escalated tensions in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts since February. On March 11, 21 civilians from the Tangkhul Naga community were detained by Kuki villagers and armed individuals in Ukhrul district while traveling along the Ukhrul–Imphal route. Following discussions involving community leaders and police, all detainees were released the following day.

Meanwhile, the NSCN-IM has refuted claims that any directives were issued from its General Headquarters in Nagaland to initiate attacks against any faction. The statement emphasized, "An investigation is underway to ascertain the facts and circumstances surrounding this tragic event. Those responsible for this failed operation will face penalties according to NARR (Naga Army Rules and Regulations). We urge the public to remain vigilant and not be misled by social media narratives."
