Ahmedabad, Sep 23 (NationPress) Commending the Centre's latest consumer-centric initiative, GST Bachat Utsav, BJP national spokesperson Rohan Gupta on Tuesday applauded the Modi government for its pragmatic governance style, emphasizing that it not only formulates plans but also ensures their execution.
His comments followed PM Modi's open letter to the public, celebrating the 'GST Bachat Utsav', an initiative designed to directly pass the benefits of reduced GST rates to consumers.
In an interview with IANS, Rohan Gupta stated, “The Modi government has indeed provided the public with a reason to celebrate this Navratri and Diwali. This is a government that doesn’t merely plan or announce programs, but one that guarantees those plans are implemented effectively. By optimizing GST, the government has facilitated a price reduction of 10 percent to 25 percent on essential commodities.”
He further emphasized that this initiative extends beyond mere tax reductions.
“The GST has not only been lowered, but the government has also ensured that manufacturers and producers adjust their pricing accordingly, thereby offering genuine economic relief to consumers.”
Referring to the government as a “compassionate administration,” Gupta criticized opposition parties.
“Those who once disparaged GST are now attempting to claim credit. This government stands firmly with the populace. From raising the tax-free income threshold to Rs 12 lakh to advocating for ‘Swadeshi’ through initiatives like this, the PM has consistently prioritized the ordinary citizen.”
In response to the claim by Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee that the GST rate reduction was politically motivated following the BJP's setbacks in the 2024 elections, Gupta replied, “The entire nation can observe the situation in Bengal. The advantages of GST have not reached the people there due to the obstructionist tactics of the Trinamool Congress. The arrogance of the Trinamool Congress has hindered Bengal’s progress. Only with a double-engine government can Bengal catch up with the rest of India.”
Meanwhile, referring to PM Modi's address regarding the rollout of GST 2.0, Banerjee questioned whether there has been a “GST Loot Utsav” occurring for the past eight years.
“There’s a Bengali proverb that states a cat never climbs a tree until it feels threatened. The BJP has faced electoral defeats; it lost 60 seats and its total in the Lok Sabha has decreased from 303 to 240. That’s why the GST rates have decreased from 27 percent to 18 percent. If their seats had dwindled further to 200, the 18 percent GST would have dropped to 9 percent,” Banerjee remarked.
