New Delhi, Aug 1 (NationPress) Officials from Tihar jail informed a Special NIA Court that Tahawwur Rana, the alleged mastermind behind the 26/11 attacks, cannot be permitted to have regular telephone conversations with his family due to security concerns, according to a lawyer’s statement on Friday.
The prison administration opposed Rana’s request for consistent telephonic communication with his relatives in their formal response to the Special National Investigation Agency (NIA) Judge at Patiala House Court.
This is not the first time Rana has sought permission for phone calls with his family. Previously, the court granted him a similar request, allowing him to make a call once.
The Tihar officials submitted their response after the Special Court requested clarification on the Pakistani-Canadian national and the mastermind of the Mumbai terror attacks' application for regular phone contact with family.
Rana, who was extradited from the United States in April to face trial for the Mumbai attack case, is currently in judicial custody until August 13.
Earlier, he had also requested a bed in his Tihar prison cell, which the court approved, and the jail authorities complied.
During earlier hearings, the NIA had informed the court that all health-related documents concerning Rana had been submitted to the jail administration.
On June 6, the Special NIA Court required a status report from Tihar jail officials after Rana’s lawyer raised concerns about his declining health.
The NIA has filed a supplementary charge sheet against Rana, a former member of the Pakistan Army’s Medical Corps, building upon an initial charge sheet filed in 2012.
This latest charge set includes Rana’s arrest memo, seizure memos, and various related documents.
The NIA has also gathered voice and handwriting samples from Rana to compare them with recordings of his conversations with co-accused David Coleman Headley, associated with the 26/11 case.
According to sources, during questioning, Rana claimed that his childhood friend and co-accused Headley was solely responsible for the reconnaissance and planning of the 26/11 attacks.
Headley, currently incarcerated in the US, has previously admitted to conducting reconnaissance missions throughout India, including in Mumbai, on behalf of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
