Official sources have indicated that the distribution via the Public Distribution System (PDS) is expected to commence in the first week of January.

The scheme, a significant element of the State’s festive tradition, holds heightened political relevance this year as it comes ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

Senior officials from the Food and Civil Supplies Department have confirmed that preparations for the rollout are progressing swiftly. Meetings involving district collectors, procurement officers, and representatives from the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation have already taken place to optimize logistics.

Once again, staggered distribution is anticipated through a token-based system designed to prevent overcrowding at fair price shops.

Each year, the State government provides festive assistance by distributing essential items such as Pacharisi (raw rice), sugar, and sugarcane to ration card holders—an initiative embraced warmly across both rural and urban areas. However, this year’s Pongal package has stirred significant public interest and political speculation, with discussions intensifying around the potential addition of a direct cash element.

Senior governmental sources reveal that the inclusion of Rs 3,000 in cash support is actively under review. If approved, this financial assistance will accompany the traditional gift pack and be made available to eligible ration card holders. The proposal is currently under consideration at the highest administrative levels, pending formal cabinet approval.

Despite the lack of final approvals, insiders indicate that the government is thoroughly evaluating both the fiscal sustainability and eligibility parameters for beneficiaries. An official announcement is anticipated shortly, with the Chief Minister expected to formally launch the distribution in the second week of January, although token distribution may begin a few days prior.

Departments have been instructed to ensure the procurement of sugarcane and rice is finalized before the year's end, given the tight timeline for the festival.
