Chennai, Sep 27 (NationPress) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has conveyed profound grief over the unfortunate stampede at the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) campaign gathering in Karur, which has resulted in 36 fatalities and left over 58 individuals hurt.
The tragic event unfolded on Saturday evening when a large crowd had gathered to listen to TVK leader and actor-turned-politician Vijay, leading to unexpected chaos and a deadly crush.
In a statement released late Saturday, the Chief Minister extended his sincere condolences to the families mourning their losses. “This is a historic tragedy. My deepest sympathies are with the grieving families. The government is here to support them during this sorrowful time,” Stalin remarked.
To provide immediate assistance, the Chief Minister announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund to the relatives of each deceased individual. Those who have sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment will be granted Rs 1 lakh each.
Stalin instructed that all medical costs for the injured be entirely covered by the government.
To determine the factors behind this catastrophe and avert similar incidents in the future, Stalin has mandated a judicial investigation headed by retired Madras High Court judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan.
The commission will look into crowd management, safety protocols at the event, and any deficiencies, and will provide a comprehensive report to the government.
Key officials, including School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi and Health Minister Ma. Subramanian, hurried to Karur to oversee rescue and medical care operations.
Additional medical teams and paramedics have been deployed from surrounding districts, and special intensive care arrangements have been established for critically injured victims. Emergency response teams from the District Collectors of Tiruchirapalli, Namakkal, and Erode have also been dispatched.
The Chief Minister plans to visit Karur tonight to personally offer comfort to the grieving families and meet with the injured.
The police have secured the event location and initiated an inquiry into how the crowd control measures failed. Authorities are urging the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading false information while emergency assistance and medical care are ongoing.
