Chennai, July 17 (NationPress) In response to learning gaps identified in the recent State-Level Achievement Survey (SLAS), Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi has initiated district-level review meetings with school leaders. The primary goal of this initiative is to enhance the academic performance of students, especially in subjects where a decline has been noted.
The SLAS, conducted in February, assessed the learning outcomes of over 9.81 lakh students from classes 3, 5, and 8 statewide.
While the survey reflected significant improvements in language skills among students in classes 3 and 5, it raised alarming concerns regarding the drop in mathematics and science performance among class 8 students.
The School Education Department attributed the positive trends in lower classes to several critical initiatives, including the Ennum Ezhuthum literacy and numeracy program, the Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme, and the establishment of smart classrooms in numerous government schools.
Nonetheless, the decline in STEM learning among older students necessitated immediate corrective measures.
Following the SLAS findings, the department circulated a directive to all government and aided schools, mandating proactive strategies to address the academic deficiencies outlined in the report.
This circular emphasizes the need for targeted approaches and updated teaching methods to improve learning outcomes across all subjects.
To launch this initiative, Minister Poyyamozhi held a review meeting on Wednesday with the leaders of 409 state-run schools from ten educational blocks in the Chengalpattu district.
The meeting aimed to analyze the data from the SLAS report and develop block-specific plans to bolster student performance.
"We have encouraged school heads and educators to pinpoint learning gaps and modify their teaching strategies accordingly to ensure tangible improvements this academic year. The emphasis will be on both pass percentages and overall learning outcomes," stated the minister.
Officials from the State Planning Commission and district education authorities also participated in the review session, providing insights and data analysis assistance.
The government plans to extend similar review meetings to additional districts in the upcoming weeks. The School Education Department underscored that ongoing monitoring, teacher training, and curriculum modifications will be key components of their remediation strategy for the remainder of the academic year.
