Chennai, Oct 14 (NationPress) Following substantial delays, the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB) is poised to inaugurate a significant housing initiative featuring 1,152 flats distributed across 16 blocks in Poochi Aathipedu village, located in Uthukottai taluk of Tiruvallur district, by December.
This four-storey development, with an investment of Rs 156 crore, aims to offer affordable housing solutions for families from economically disadvantaged backgrounds in both Tiruvallur and Chennai districts.
Launched in 2019 under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) – Housing for All scheme, the project was initially expected to finish within 18 months. However, the pandemic led to a work halt lasting nearly two years. The completion timeline has been revised three times—from December 2022 to June 2023, and subsequently to June 2025—before being confirmed for this year.
This initiative seeks to enhance urban housing conditions by providing secure and affordable residences to low-income families and slum dwellers.
The executive engineer of TNUHDB in Tiruvallur mentioned that each flat is priced at Rs 13.55 lakh, with Rs 6.5 lakh funded by the state government and Rs 1.5 lakh from the Union government. Eligible beneficiaries must have an annual income below Rs 3 lakh and are required to contribute Rs 6.5 lakh.
As of now, nearly 90 percent of the construction is finalized, with remaining tasks such as painting and the installation of a sewage treatment facility still pending.
The project is anticipated to be ready for residents by December, thanks to an extension provided to the contractor.
Beyond the residential units, the housing complex is being equipped with vital civic amenities, including a community hall, a primary school, a Primary Health Centre (PHC), two nursery schools, and three ration shops.
Applications for the flats were processed through the TNUHDB portal and the Chief Minister’s Special Cell. Once inaugurated, this project is expected to represent a significant achievement in the state government’s ongoing mission to enhance affordable housing and elevate living conditions for economically weaker segments throughout the Chennai-Tiruvallur region.
