TNVP Exits DMK Alliance Over Unmet Seat-Sharing & Justice Demands
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, March 22 (NationPress) In a major blow to the DMK-led coalition ahead of the Assembly elections, the founder of the Tamil Nadu Vazhvurimai Party (TNVP), T. Velmurugan, declared his party's withdrawal from the alliance on Sunday. His decision came as a result of frustration over the seat-sharing negotiations and the government's failure to address crucial social justice issues.
Having secured victory in the Panruti constituency of Cuddalore district during the 2021 Assembly elections under the DMK’s Rising Sun symbol, Velmurugan aimed to obtain at least two constituencies this time, alongside the option to contest under a distinct party emblem.
However, the DMK reportedly indicated that it could only provide one seat, leading to rising dissatisfaction within the TNVP.
The situation intensified when Velmurugan presented a list of 10 essential demands to DMK leadership, stressing that his party would only contemplate remaining in the alliance if these requests were acknowledged and acted upon by the government.
Key demands included a 10.5% internal reservation for the Vanniyar community, prioritization of Tamils for all state government positions, and the implementation of a caste-based census in Tamil Nadu.
In announcing his party's exit, Velmurugan accused the DMK government of consistently disregarding the matters raised by his organization both within and outside the Assembly.
“We have made numerous requests to the government, yet none have been taken seriously. Although the government may have changed, the conditions on the ground remain unchanged,” he stated to reporters.
He further condemned the DMK for its lack of concrete action towards conducting a caste-based census, questioning its dedication to social justice. “What currently exists is the dominance of privileged classes. How can the DMK profess to support social justice while ignoring these vital issues?” he inquired.
Regarding his future political direction, Velmurugan dismissed any potential collaboration with the BJP-led coalition. Instead, he indicated that the TNVP would seek alliances with parties willing to accept and fulfill its demands.
He mentioned that discussions were actively taking place and that an announcement regarding future alliances would be made soon.
