DMK Alliance Talks Stalemated as CPI-M Demands Six Seats for Tamil Nadu Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, March 22 (NationPress) The ongoing seat-sharing discussions within the DMK-led coalition for the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections have reached a pivotal moment, as the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) stands firm on its request for six constituencies, creating a temporary stalemate in negotiations.
In the previous Assembly elections of 2021, the CPI-M contested six seats under the DMK banner and succeeded in winning two. As preparations intensify for the 2026 elections, the party's leadership emphasizes the importance of retaining its previous allocation, citing their strong grassroots presence and cadre strength as justification for this demand.
The situation has become more complex with the addition of new coalition partners such as the DMDK and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), which has increased competition for seat distribution. In response, DMK leaders have proposed a reduction in the seats available for existing allies.
On Saturday, the CPI-M held a series of intense internal discussions, starting with a four-hour meeting of the state working committee in the morning, followed by a lengthy state committee meeting from 3 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. During these discussions, members were encouraged to share their views in an effort to reach a consensus. As disagreements persisted, a two-hour state executive committee meeting was convened later that night.
Reports suggest that the executive committee unanimously affirmed the party's position to contest six seats, consistent with its prior electoral arrangement.
The leadership decided to convey this stance directly to the DMK. A delegation, headed by CPI-M state Secretary Shanmugam, later met with Chief Minister and DMK President M K Stalin at Anna Arivalayam to discuss the issue.
After the meeting, Shanmugam informed journalists that while the party initially sought a larger number of seats, they are willing to accept six based on the decision made by the state committee. He also mentioned that Chief Minister Stalin suggested the CPI-M consider five seats due to the challenges posed by the inclusion of new allies in the coalition.
The CPI-M leadership plans to present this proposal to its state executive committee and will make a final decision soon. An announcement is expected either later on Sunday or by Monday, which could significantly impact the structure and unity of the DMK-led alliance in the lead-up to the elections.
