DMK and DMDK to Engage in Key Seat-Sharing Discussions Tomorrow Amid Election Countdown
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, March 24 (NationPress) The alliance led by the DMK is poised to engage in critical discussions regarding seat-sharing with the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) on Wednesday. This comes at a time when essential negotiations within the ruling coalition are still pending, just days before the nomination process kicks off on March 30.
With the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections on the horizon, set for April 23, the uncertainty around the finalization of seat-sharing arrangements within the DMK alliance persists.
Despite multiple discussion rounds, the ruling party has yet to conclude negotiations with all its coalition partners, leading to rising tensions within the alliance.
To date, the DMK has allocated 28 seats to the Congress party, five seats each to the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and four seats to the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK).
Furthermore, smaller allies such as the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and the Kongunadu People’s National Party have each been assigned two seats.
In total, approximately 48 seats have been distributed among the alliance partners, while the DMK is anticipated to maintain a significant share of constituencies.
This situation has resulted in increasing demands from several allies who are advocating for a larger share and enhanced representation in the electoral contest.
In light of these developments, the DMDK has established a five-member committee to participate in Wednesday’s discussions.
This panel will feature prominent leaders, including presidium chairman Ilangovan and treasurer L.K. Sudhish, and is expected to play a pivotal role in defining the party’s stance during negotiations.
Sources suggest that both parties are eager to reach a formal agreement swiftly, with hopes that a deal could materialize on the very first day of discussions.
DMDK general secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth has expressed a willingness to be flexible, indicating that the party is prepared to make compromises for the sake of alliance unity.
Meanwhile, the DMK is likely to engage in parallel discussions with other coalition partners, including the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), as it aims to resolve outstanding issues and project a united front ahead of the elections.
As the nomination deadline approaches, finalizing seat-sharing arrangements has become essential for the alliance to transition into full campaign mode across Tamil Nadu.
