Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 3 (NationPress) In a prompt response to the widely circulated footage of a female tourist facing harassment from local taxi operators in Munnar, the Kerala Police have suspended two officers and apprehended two taxi drivers named Vinayakan and Vijayakumar on Monday.
This incident has ignited significant outrage online, leading the state government to vow measures to enhance tourist safety in the scenic hill region.
The viral video, shared by Janvi, an assistant professor from Mumbai, depicted a group of taxi drivers confronting and intimidating her and her companions for opting for an online cab service instead of a local taxi near the KSRTC bus stand in Munnar on October 30.
The drivers, who reportedly oppose app-based taxi services, allegedly threatened the tourists, insisting they would not be permitted to travel unless they hired local taxis.
Janvi claimed that upon seeking assistance from the police, officers were unresponsive, aligning with the stance of the taxi union.
"We were compelled to hire another vehicle and ultimately had to shorten our trip due to fear," she stated in the video, which has since been removed but had already gained significant attention.
In light of the public uproar, Munnar police initiated a suo motu case under Sections 126(2), 351(2), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, concerning wrongful restraint and criminal intimidation.
The initial FIR did not name any suspects, but police have subsequently identified three taxi drivers, with two currently in custody and the third expected to be apprehended shortly.
State Tourism Minister P.A. Mohammed Riyas described the incident as "unfortunate" and asserted that it "should never have occurred," promising actions to enhance police oversight and prevent tourist harassment in the future.
This event has reignited discussions regarding the dominance of local taxi unions in tourist hotspots and the difficulties faced by app-based taxi services in Kerala.
