Toyota Innova Hycross viral video: Fuel contamination, not E20, says TKM
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) on Saturday, 4 July issued a formal clarification stating that a widely circulated social media video alleging that the Toyota Innova Hycross suffered mechanical issues due to E20 ethanol-blended fuel was factually incorrect. According to the company's technical assessment, the root cause was fuel contamination — not the ethanol content of the fuel itself.
What TKM's Technical Assessment Found
The automaker confirmed that the Innova Hycross model featured in the viral clip is fully E20-compatible, having been designed, tested, and certified to run on fuel containing up to 20 per cent ethanol. 'Based on our detailed technical assessment of the vehicle, the issue was due to fuel contamination. Our inspection confirmed that there was no damage to any vehicle component or its fuel system,' TKM said in its statement.
The company's service team subsequently drained and cleaned the fuel tank and fuel lines, refilled the vehicle with standard E20 fuel, and returned it to the customer after confirming normal operation.
Company's Verdict on the Viral Clip
'It is clearly apparent that this incident is not related to E20 fuel usage and was solely caused by non-standard and contaminated fuel,' TKM stated. The company advised all customers to refuel exclusively at authorised and reputed fuel stations to minimise the risk of adulteration or contamination, both of which can adversely affect vehicle performance regardless of fuel type.
Government Steps In to Counter Misinformation
The clarification follows a move by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), which on Friday, 3 July dismissed as 'false and misleading' the claims spreading across social media platforms — namely that E20 petrol is harmful to vehicles, causes higher pollution levels, and leads to water wastage through ethanol crop production. The ministry's intervention signals growing official concern over misinformation around India's ethanol-blending programme.
Why This Matters for India's Ethanol Push
India's E20 blending mandate is a central plank of the government's strategy to reduce crude oil imports and lower vehicular emissions. Viral videos questioning E20's safety risk undermining public confidence in a programme that automakers and policymakers have invested heavily in. Notably, most major carmakers — including Toyota — have already certified their newer models for E20 compatibility ahead of the national rollout. TKM urged customers to rely on 'credible, science-based information from official sources' and to contact authorised dealerships for any queries on fuel compatibility.
