Uttarkashi, June 29 (NationPress) A tragic incident unfolded in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand early Sunday morning, where at least two labourers have lost their lives and seven others remain unaccounted for following a severe cloudburst that initiated a landslide. The calamity struck near a hotel under construction in the Silai region, sweeping away a campsite that housed 29 workers.
Out of the trapped individuals, 20 were successfully rescued, while reports confirmed that nine remained missing. Tragically, authorities later verified the deaths of two individuals.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, addressing the media, confirmed the recovery of the two deceased. "This morning, a significant landslide occurred in Uttarkashi, trapping 29 workers at the site. We have managed to evacuate 20 individuals, and so far, two bodies have been found," he stated.
Dhami assured that comprehensive rescue operations are actively taking place. "Teams from the NDRF, SDRF, and other relevant organizations are conducting the rescue efforts at the scene. All District Magistrates have been instructed to maintain heightened vigilance for the next two months," he added.
The affected workers were engaged in the construction of a private hotel. An official statement revealed that the rescue mission involves 20 units of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), five units of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), alongside eight police teams.
The missing individuals have been identified as Dujelal (55), Keval Thapa (43), Roshani Choudhary (40), Vimla Dhami (26), Kalluram Chaudhary (55), Bobby (38), Chotu (22), Priyansh (20), and Manish Dhami (40).
Given the adverse weather conditions, authorities have advised pilgrims to delay their travel plans to the Char Dham shrines—Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri—and to seek refuge in safe locations until the situation stabilizes.
The Chief Minister mentioned that food, shelter, and essential services are being provided at designated facilities for those affected.
"Due to inclement weather, we have suspended the Char Dham Yatra. Pilgrims are advised to remain in safe locations where food and necessary resources are available. Once conditions improve, they will be allowed to proceed," CM Dhami remarked.
He also addressed the ongoing UPSC examinations across the state. "In certain districts, we ensured that students and candidates were transported to exam locations. Despite the adverse weather, the number of candidates participating is better than last year. We are committed to ensuring everyone's safety," he concluded.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts within the state.
Vikram Singh, Director of the Dehradun Weather Office, stated, "Heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated over the next two days across several districts in Uttarakhand. A red alert has been issued for Rudraprayag, Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Nainital, Champawat, Haridwar, and Udham Singh Nagar. An orange alert is also in effect for other districts starting Sunday."
He further cautioned residents living adjacent to rivers and streams to take precautions and relocate to safer areas.
"Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also predicted on July 1 and 2," he warned.
As rivers swell dangerously near their banks, the administration has urged those living close to riverbanks to stay alert and adhere to safety protocols.
