Dehradun, June 30 (NationPress) The Char Dham Yatra has officially resumed on Monday after a 24-hour suspension, as confirmed by officials. This pause was initiated due to continuous rainfall and increasing risks of landslides across Uttarakhand. Garhwal Divisional Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey stated, 'The ban on the Char Dham Yatra has been lifted.'

He emphasized that all District Magistrates along the Yatra route are to monitor vehicle movement according to the current weather conditions in their respective regions.

The suspension was put in place on Sunday as a preventive measure aimed at ensuring the safety of both pilgrims and residents amidst extreme weather.

In light of these conditions, authorities had advised pilgrims to remain at their current locations and avoid traveling to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri until the situation improved.

This decision came after a severe cloudburst near Silai on the Barkot-Yamunotri road in the Uttarkashi district, which resulted in at least nine road construction workers going missing.

Tragically, two labourers lost their lives, while the search continues for seven others who remain unaccounted for. The cloudburst occurred near an under-construction hotel in the Silai area along the Yamunotri National Highway, washing away the campsite where 29 workers had taken refuge.

Though 20 individuals were rescued, nine are still reported missing. The authorities confirmed two fatalities, and the search for the remaining seven is ongoing.

Multiple points along the Yamunotri National Highway were blocked close to Silai Band, significantly impacting travel routes. Officials at NH Barkot were notified to address the situation, and debris was subsequently cleared.

In other areas of the state, the National Highway near Nandprayag and Bhaneropani was also obstructed due to debris, while the Sonprayag-Munkatiya road in Rudraprayag—a crucial route for Kedarnath pilgrims—was closed due to landslides.

Heavy rainfall continues to impact several districts, including Chamoli, Pauri Garhwal, Dehradun, Rudraprayag, among others.

As rivers rise dangerously close to their banks, local authorities have issued a renewed advisory urging residents near riverbanks to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions.

Point of View

It is essential to balance the spiritual significance of the Char Dham Yatra with the pressing safety concerns posed by extreme weather conditions. The authorities' decision to suspend the pilgrimage reflects a commitment to protecting lives, which aligns with a nation-first approach in such critical situations.
