Dehradun, June 29 (NationPress) Due to incessant heavy rainfall and an increased risk of landslides, the Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand has been temporarily halted for a full day as a safety precaution, officials announced on Sunday.
This decision aims to protect the lives and property of the thousands of pilgrims and local residents affected by the worsening weather conditions in the area.
Garhwal Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey explained, "The Chardham Yatra has been delayed for a day considering the relentless heavy rainfall and the associated landslide risks. This measure is taken to ensure the safety of individuals and their belongings."
Officials have released advisories encouraging pilgrims to stay put and refrain from traveling to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri until weather conditions improve.
Pandey further mentioned that district administrations are on high alert, with rescue and relief teams now operational.
"We will assess the weather conditions and travel routes tomorrow to make further travel decisions. Pilgrims must adhere to the guidelines provided by the authorities and delay their journeys until the weather stabilizes," he stated.
This suspension follows a severe cloudburst near Silai Band on the Barkot-Yamunotri road in Uttarkashi district, which has left at least nine road construction laborers unaccounted for.
The laborers, who were working at a hotel construction site, are feared to have been swept away by the landslide triggered by the cloudburst.
The Yamunotri National Highway has been blocked at several locations near Silai Band, significantly impacting the route. Authorities at NH Barkot have been alerted to manage the situation.
In various parts of the state, the National Highway near Nandprayag and Bhaneropani has been obstructed due to debris, while the Sonprayag-Munkatiya road in Rudraprayag—a crucial route for Kedarnath pilgrims—has been closed following landslides.
Movement of pilgrims has been momentarily suspended at Sonprayag and Gaurikund for safety reasons.
In Syanachatti, debris has blocked drainage systems, disrupting the flow of the Yamuna River and creating a significant risk for hotels and settlements in low-lying areas.
Heavy rainfall continues to batter several districts, including Chamoli, Pauri, Dehradun, and Rudraprayag. Numerous link roads remain closed due to ongoing landslides.
As water levels in rivers rise alarmingly, the administration has released a new advisory urging residents near riverbanks to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions.
