Chennai, Jan 31 (NationPress) Five individuals, including four pilgrims, lost their lives and three others suffered injuries in two distinct road mishaps in Siruvachur and Mangalamedu within Perambalur district over the recent weekend.

In the first incident, a group of devotees heading towards the Samayapuram temple were struck by a car near the Siruvachur bridge during the early Saturday hours.

According to police reports, over ten pilgrims from Cuddalore and Salem districts had begun their journey on foot as part of a religious observance. When they approached the Siruvachur bridge, a vehicle traveling from Chennai to Tiruchy allegedly collided with them from behind.

Three women — S. Malarkodi (35) and B. Vijayalakshmi from Tholar Kudikadu village in Cuddalore, and M. Chitra (40) from Gangavalli in Salem — tragically died at the scene.

Three others, identified as P. Jothilakshmi (57), M. Tamilarasi (42), and S. Vijayalakshmi (43), all hailing from Tholar Kudikadu, suffered serious injuries and were promptly transported to the Perambalur Government Hospital for medical care.

Another pilgrim, T. Sasikala (47), also from Tholar Kudikadu, succumbed to her injuries later, raising the death toll in this incident to four.

The deceased's remains were sent to the Perambalur Government Hospital for autopsy.

Authorities have filed a case and apprehended the driver of the car, S. Gowtham (24) from Tirusulam, Chennai.

Ongoing investigations into this tragic event are in progress.

A witness at the scene recounted to reporters that the group had been carefully walking along the road when the accident unfolded.

“The car appeared unexpectedly and collided with us. It all happened in an instant. It felt surreal, like something out of a film,” reflected the devotee.

In a separate incident on Friday night, S. Navshad Ali (22) from V. Kalathur in Perambalur was killed while riding his two-wheeler home from the Thirumandurai toll plaza.

Police indicated that this accident took place near Thirumandurai on the Chennai–Tiruchy National Highway, where he reportedly crashed into a lorry carrying wood that was in front of him.

Mangalamedu police quickly arrived at the scene following reports, recovered Navshad Ali’s body, and sent it to the Perambalur Government Hospital for an autopsy.

A case has been initiated, with investigations ongoing to determine the precise cause of this accident.
