Rudraprayag, June 15 (NationPress) A devastating helicopter crash claimed the lives of all seven individuals on board, including a 23-month-old infant and the pilot, early Sunday morning. The tragic incident occurred as the helicopter was traveling from Kedarnath Dham to Guptkashi, crashing in the Gaurikund area of Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district.
The aircraft went down in a densely wooded area near Gauri Mai Khark during its brief 10-minute flight, crashing between Gaurikund and Sonprayag around 5:20 a.m.
As stated by the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA), the victims comprised six pilgrims — five adults and one infant — from various states, including Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.
The pilot was included among those who perished in the crash.
The incident is believed to have been caused by poor visibility and adverse weather conditions, which authorities indicate were significant factors in the tragedy.
Rescue and recovery operations are currently underway, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) en route to the site to assist in the ongoing efforts.
The crash site is situated in a challenging, forested area above Gauri Mai Khark, complicating the rescue operations.
SDRF teams are working diligently to navigate the rugged terrain to reach the crash location.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his sorrow on social media, stating, "We have received very sad news regarding a helicopter crash in Rudraprayag district. SDRF, local administration, and other rescue teams are engaged in relief and rescue operations. I pray to Baba Kedar for the safety of all travelers."
This incident marks the fifth aviation-related occurrence since the Kedarnath temple reopened on May 2.
A separate helicopter incident on June 7 involved a technical fault during take-off, resulting in an emergency landing on the Rudraprayag-Gaurikund highway.
During that incident, the tail rotor struck a parked vehicle, and the helicopter narrowly avoided nearby buildings. Fortunately, while all five pilgrims aboard were unharmed, the pilot suffered minor injuries.
