Kolkata, March 17 (NationPress) Trinamool Congress MPs from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are set to bring attention to the issues of duplicate Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers affecting voters across various states, as well as fraudulent Aadhaar cards, during the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament.
“In the memorandum our delegation of MPs submitted to the Election Commission of India (ECI), we highlighted the problems concerning both duplicate EPIC numbers and fake Aadhaar cards.
“Our MPs in both Houses will actively discuss these two critical matters in the coming days, as directed by our leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee,” stated a Lok Sabha member involved in the delegation.
He mentioned that the party aims to foster collaboration with other non-BJP parties on these issues to ensure a united Opposition voice in Parliament.
Nonetheless, he pointed out that the Trinamool Congress leadership, including Mamata Banerjee, is somewhat dissatisfied with the Congress's efforts to maintain a cohesive opposition strategy, not just on these matters but other significant topics as well.
“We expect that regarding these two issues, the Congress will demonstrate more flexibility in coordinating with the Opposition,” the Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member expressed.
The primary request from the Trinamool Congress is for the ECI to provide comprehensive information on the total number of EPIC cards with duplicate numbers in the country, along with a state-wise breakdown, and to clarify whether voters with duplicate EPIC numbers will be prohibited from voting.
The ruling party in West Bengal has already voiced its concerns about why the ECI kept the issue of duplicate EPIC numbers under wraps until it was publicly raised by Mamata Banerjee.
The party asserts that issuing two voters the same EPIC number contravenes Rule 28 of the Representation of People Act.
