Kolkata, June 29 (NationPress) The Trinamool Congress has issued a show-cause notice to senior party official and MLA Madan Mitra following his contentious remarks regarding the law college rape incident. On Saturday, Mitra suggested that the assault could have been avoided if the victim had brought friends along or informed someone before heading to the college.
After the rape allegations emerged, three suspects, affiliated with the Trinamool Congress' student wing—the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP)—were apprehended. Mitra stated that the incident serves as a warning to young women, advising them against attending the college alone when it is closed.
"This incident sends a clear message to girls: if someone calls you when the college is shut, it’s best not to go; it could lead to trouble. Had she not gone there, this tragedy could have been averted," he remarked.
In response, the Trinamool Congress issued a statement distancing itself from Mitra’s comments, labeling them as personal and condemning them strongly.
Mitra later took to his official X account to clarify that he was not defending the accused. He claimed that his statements had been misinterpreted and exploited by a biased group aiming to tarnish the party's reputation.
On Sunday, Subrata Bakshi, the state president of the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, delivered the notice to Mitra, requesting a response within three days.
The notice criticized Mitra's remarks as “uninvited, unnecessary, and lacking sensitivity,” stating, “Your comments have negatively impacted the party's image and contradict our zero-tolerance policy regarding such incidents. You are required to explain your breach of party discipline within three days,” Bakshi's letter stated.
Mitra has not yet commented on this recent development.
