All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) Lok Sabha member Mahua Moitra, representing Krishnanagar, alleged on Wednesday, 16 September that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers hurled eggs at her vehicle as she departed a party meeting in Tehatta, Nadia district, West Bengal. Moitra shared videos of the alleged incident on social media, claiming that BJP office-bearers had surrounded the venue and targeted her convoy as it left.

What Moitra Alleged

According to Moitra, the attack was carried out not by members of the general public but specifically by BJP office-bearers. She invoked a recent observation by Supreme Court judge Justice Dipankar Datta — who had reportedly remarked that politicians should not be overly concerned about egg attacks given that freedom fighters once faced bullets — and said she had met the situation in that same spirit.

'BJP office bearers (NOT public) surrounded my meeting and pelted eggs as I left. Thank you, MiLord, for upholding our Constitutional protections,' Moitra said. She added: 'I came to my constituency for a meeting, informing West Bengal Police and the BJP workers with their help, pelted eggs on me. True to your advice, I faced them as a freedom fighter faced bullets.'

The Police Notification Dispute

Moitra also levelled a pointed allegation against the officer-in-charge of Tehatta Police Station, identified as Supriya Ranjan Maji, who reportedly claimed on camera that no one had informed him of her visit to Tehatta. Moitra flatly contradicted this, stating that the Nadia district police superintendent had issued a letter about her visit and that Maji had been copied on the communication.

'Does Mr Maji also have the BJP disease of short-term memory loss? Disgraceful,' Moitra said, sharply criticising what she described as a deliberate attempt to misrepresent the facts of her visit.

BJP's Counter-Claim

The BJP legislator from Tehatta, Subrata Kobiraj, denied any involvement of his party's workers in the incident. Kobiraj claimed the egg attack was instead the product of internal factionalism within the TMC in Nadia district. 'This was the result of factional conflict within Trinamool Congress. Here, one group is backing Moitra, while another is against her. Trinamool Congress in Nadia is now divided into two groups, and an anti-Moitra group attacked her. BJP had nothing to do with it,' he said.

This comes amid an already tense political climate in West Bengal, where inter-party clashes and intra-party friction have frequently escalated into public confrontations. Moitra, a high-profile and outspoken MP, has previously been at the centre of national controversies, making any incident involving her a flashpoint for rival political narratives. Notably, the competing claims — BJP blaming TMC factionalism, and Moitra blaming BJP office-bearers — reflect the difficulty in independently verifying the source of such attacks without police or judicial inquiry. The incident is likely to intensify scrutiny of law-and-order management in Nadia ahead of future electoral cycles.
