Trinamool Set to Introduce Motion Against Waqf (Amendment) Bill in Bengal Assembly

Kolkata, Dec 2 (NationPress) The Trinamool Congress will introduce a motion on Monday in the West Bengal Assembly to contest the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which is presently being examined by the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).
The Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, is anticipated to engage in the discussion regarding the motion during the sixth day of the ongoing winter session.
This session is set to run until December 10.
The Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, has already urged members of the BJP legislative team to be present in the House to actively participate in the discussion surrounding the motion.
The Trinamool Congress has delineated two key objections to the proposed Bill.
The first concern addresses the Bill's suggestion to assign District Magistrates the responsibility for surveying existing Waqf properties in their respective districts. The party contends that such a move towards “bureaucratisation” of the review process for Waqf properties is unacceptable.
The second objection pertains to the proposal to seize assets that have been verbally acknowledged as Waqf properties. The party asserts that this represents a deliberate attempt at divisive politics by the ruling party at the Centre.
Last week, during a session in the House, the Chief Minister declared that the new Bill aims to fundamentally destabilize the Waqf system across the country. “This Bill targets a specific religion. It undermines the fundamental principles of equality and the right to practice any religion. That is precisely why we are opposing this Bill,” the Chief Minister emphasized.
On Monday, an oath-taking ceremony will also take place for six legislators from the Trinamool Congress, who were elected during last month’s bypolls. Governor C.V. Ananda Bose will personally attend the Assembly to administer the oaths.
All attention is now focused on whether there will be any discussion between the Governor and the Chief Minister during this event within the Assembly.
