Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 13 (NationPress) A Trinamool Congress worker has been taken into custody in relation to the recent suicide of a BLO in Bengal’s Murshidabad, police reported on Tuesday.
According to officials, the Trinamool worker failed to repay a loan of Rs 20 lakh to the deceased BLO, leading to severe mental distress for the latter.
In the beginning, the local leadership of Trinamool in Murshidabad claimed the death was due to SIR-related pressure. They even organized demonstrations outside the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal in Kolkata. Nevertheless, further investigations led the authorities to the Trinamool worker, who was arrested on Monday.
The arrested individual has been identified as Bullet Khan, residing in the area governed by the Ranitala police station in Murshidabad district, while the deceased BLO was named Hamimul Islam.
Khan was presented before the Lalbagh sub-divisional court, which ordered a five-day police custody.
The body of Hamimul Islam, a Booth Level Officer from Alaipur village in Bhagwangola Block II, was discovered in a school on the night of January 10.
As per police reports, Khan had borrowed Rs 20 lakh from the BLO and allegedly threatened him with death if he demanded repayment. This situation reportedly led to the BLO's tragic decision to take his own life.
A case has been registered against the Trinamool Congress worker, accusing him of abetting suicide.
A senior official from the Murshidabad police stated, "A person known as Bullet Khan has been apprehended. He is recognized as a Trinamool Congress member. An FIR has been filed based on complaints from the family of the deceased BLO. The investigation is ongoing."
In light of these allegations, BJP spokesperson Debjit Sarkar commented, "This reflects the true nature of Trinamool Congress. They are misleading the public concerning the deaths of BLOs and intimidating individuals through deception."
Bappaditya Banerjee, convener of the BLO Rights Forum, asserted that the committee will advocate for the rights of BLOs.
