This incident occurred in the Raninagar area of Murshidabad district in West Bengal.
The individual taken into custody is Ainal Haque, a representative of the Raninagar II Panchayat Samiti.
Haque is accused of exerting pressure on a school headmaster, leveling theft accusations against him and demanding a sum of Rs 35 lakh.
Ujjwal Singh Roy, the headmaster, tragically took his own life on Tuesday, unable to endure the weight of these false allegations. His family subsequently lodged a complaint with the authorities, prompting the arrest.
Polly Singh Roy, the widow of the deceased headmaster, spoke to the press, stating: "The Trinamool leader persistently threatened my husband, saying he would imprison him unjustly and prove him a thief. He demanded Rs 35 lakh for his release. These threats led to my husband’s severe mental anguish, ultimately resulting in his tragic decision to end his life."
According to police reports, Ainal Haque is facing charges under sections 108, 351, and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.
On Tuesday morning, the lifeless body of Ujjwal Singh Roy, the acting headmaster of Babultoli Khalilur Rahman Vidya Niketan School, was found hanging in his residence.
BJP leader Sajal Ghosh criticized the Trinamool Congress, accusing them of corruption by intimidating an educator.
"Those responsible for such acts must face justice. How is it permissible for a Trinamool leader to pressure a headmaster? He serves the public. The Trinamool Congress must take accountability for this incident. The only resolution to end this cycle of intimidation is to remove the Trinamool from power," remarked the BJP leader.
