Kolkata, Aug 2 (NationPress) Four individuals were apprehended on Saturday in relation to the homicide of a local Trinamool Congress leader in the Konnagar region of West Bengal's Hooghly district.
The police believe that the murder stemmed from a land dispute.
Sources within the police indicated that the suspects were arrested for the killing of Pintu Chakraborty, also known as Munna, a member of the Kanaipur Panchayat, on July 30.
"The four suspects were identified after analyzing CCTV footage from the crime scene. We are also probing the involvement of others who may have played a role in this crime or were part of the conspiracy," stated a police official.
The identities of the arrested individuals have not been disclosed and will only be revealed following their court appearance later today.
Munna was assaulted as he was closing his shop and making his way to a Trinamool Congress party meeting.
He was critically injured during the attack and was rushed to the hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Initial investigations revealed that a land dispute may have been the motive behind his murder.
"The suspects conducted reconnaissance before executing the crime. They had gathered prior intelligence on the movements and daily routine of the deceased Trinamool Congress member. It was a premeditated murder," the police officer remarked.
In the previous month, around seven Trinamool Congress leaders lost their lives in various incidents across five districts. While some were victims of personal vendettas, others were killed due to political motives, including internal strife within the Trinamool Congress.
On July 21, Trinamool worker Pratik Pal (43) was assaulted by several assailants while returning home in Rejinagar. He suffered severe injuries to his head, arms, and legs after being attacked with iron rods and a hammer.
He later succumbed to his injuries in the Rejinagar area of Murshidabad district.
