Kolkata, Aug 3 (NationPress) - On Sunday, the West Bengal Police announced the arrest of a notorious gangster known as Bagha, in connection with the recent murder of a local Trinamool Congress leader in Konnagar, located in Hooghly district. The arrest took place in the Sonamukhi area of Bankura district on Saturday night, according to state police officials.
The slain leader, Pintu Chakraborty, a member of the Kanaipur panchayat, was reportedly killed over a land dispute.
Investigations revealed that there was contention within the local panchayat regarding the sale of land owned by a local organization. Despite the majority supporting the sale, the Trinamool leader stood against it.
“He became the primary obstacle to the land sale, leading to a conspiracy to eliminate him. Contract killers were hired, and late last night, gangster Bagha was captured in Bankura,” stated a police officer.
So far, a total of four individuals have been detained in connection with this incident. Earlier on Saturday, police apprehended Bishwanath Das alias Bisha, Bishwajit Pramanik, and Deepak Mandal. Bisha, a business associate of the deceased Trinamool leader, was embroiled in a land dispute with him, as noted by the police.
It was revealed that Bisha and Bagha had contracted Bishwajit and Deepak for Rs three lakh to carry out the assassination of Pintu Chakraborty.
The police collected CCTV footage from the murder scene, which showed Bishwajit and Deepak scouting the area a day prior to the incident.
By tracking the tower locations of their phones, investigators were able to conduct a raid on Friday night, resulting in the arrest of the two hired killers. Their involvement led to Bisha’s subsequent arrest.
“During the interrogation, Bagha's name emerged as a key figure in the murder plot alongside Bisha, prompting his arrest,” the police confirmed.
On July 30, Pintu Chakraborty, also known as Munna, was attacked while traveling on a road in Konnagar, Hooghly district.
Immediately after the assault, the gravely injured leader was rushed to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. He had closed his shop for the day and was en route to a Trinamool Congress meeting at the time of the attack.
